If blueberry or blackberry picking is not on your summer to-do list, let me give you some advice: ADD IT. It’s a summer activity fit for anyone. Even teething babies! I’m thinking day dates with your love, girls day out, time with the grand kids, etc.! Between the colors, smell, taste and overall satisfaction of berry picking, I’d call it therapeutic.
If you plan to take your kids, let me recommend reading the classic, Blueberries for Sal beforehand. It’s one of my oldest son’s favorite books and he was pumped that WE were going to be the ones picking blueberries this time. During picking, we enjoyed referencing the book. Especially saying, “kuplink, kuplank, kuplunk!” as we started filling our buckets!
Our family friend, Brooke, took us out to Chautauqua Hills Farm mid-June, just as the blackberries were maturing for some family friendly fun. This place is out-of-this-world cool. A southeast Kansas “diamond in the rough”. Heck, if I lived elsewhere, I would plan to travel there every summer. The orchard is beautiful and the customer service is top-notch.
You can pick your own or if you would prefer to skip the picking there is an order and pick up option. Click on this link to get started.
This was our first time experiencing berry picking, let alone, being in a berry orchard. I had called my mom a few weeks prior and told her to skip town so we could do this for her birthday. I’m so glad she did. We made some great memories!
You can find Chautauqua Hills Farm on Facebook here. Be sure to sign up for their email newsletter!
Check out Aunt B’s “Best Batter, Ever! Blueberry Cream Muffins” recipe. I’m not kidding about the batter. You may have to enlist someone to take the bowl away from you while you are waiting for your muffins to bake. It’s addicting!
I made an oath to myself early on with blogging recipes: List the recipe first and then write blah-blah that goes with it or list the recipe by itself. So, you’ll find it in the recipe tab on the blog or click here. You’re welcome 🙂 and happy eating!
